Fun on the Web Oct 30 '09 Internet Turns 40

The Internet turns 40! Of course it's not the WWW we have all come to know but was a test interface display with a computer that took up a refrigerated room. It was only available to universities, scientists, and the very largest companies.

Fun on the Web Oct 29 '09 Recipe for Stress

My favorite fictional character's quote comes from Diane Mott Davidson's Goldy Bear (Schultz)
. . . "recipe for stress 'take chocolate and call me when it's over' . . . "and ". . . chocolate always tastes best with more chocolate."

Fun on the Web Oct 24 '09 Funny

Thanks to Lori for this one:

A new supermarket opened in Atlanta, GA. It has an automatic water

mister to keep the produce fresh. Just before it goes on, you hear the

sound of distant thunder and the smell of fresh rain.

When you pass the milk cases, you hear cows mooing and you experience

the scent of fresh mown hay.

In the meat department, there is the aroma of charcoal grilled steaks

with onions.

When you approach the egg case, you hear hens cluck and cackle, and

the air is filled with the pleasing aroma of bacon and eggs frying.

The bread department features the tantalizing smell of fresh baked

bread and cookies.

I don't buy toilet paper there any more.

Fun on the Web Oct 17 '09 Cake Wreck

"A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places."

Fun on the Web Oct 15 '09 More Scrabble Resources

A preprinted scoresheet's main advantage over a blank page is a preprinted list of the 100 tiles with which the bag starts. Most players will freely let others copy the printed scoresheet they use. The following are freely available on-line:

Weather forecast for tonight: dark. Continued dark overnight, with widely scattered light by morning. ~~ George Carlin (1937 - 2008)

Fun on the Web Oct 11 '09 Bentos

Although I'm currently making most of my meals at home I thought I might experiment with Bento type cooking to see if its something I could sustain when I need to make lunches to go. I recognize that my last set of circumstances got me into some bad habits with the no meat issue and being lactose intolerant didn't help. Perhaps this is a way to get more healthful food, while reducing the cost of eating "out" every day.

This site includes basics and how to help

Fun on the Web Oct 8 '09 You Know You Are From Milwaukee

You Know You Are from Milwaukee When. . .

Its always Miller Time

You call Air Force Ones Dookies

You call Lake Michigan "the lake"

You tailgate for more than just football games

You know where the bubbler is

The smell of yeast does not phase you

You've cruised on HWY 100

You call it Mil-town

You know what and where the "village" is

You understand the difference between the green and the blue street signs

You use the lake to give you a sense of direction

You have gone to Summerfest for more than just the music

You have had many meals that were just beer, brats & kraut

You know the best brats are cooked in beer before they are grilled

You know what the "beast" is

You measure distance in time

You can drive 65 in 3 inches of snow

You go out to the suburbs to go trick or treating

You go to a fish fry every Friday in the summer

You know how to polka

You know to get all your alcohol bought before 9 pm

You vacation in Door County

You have the goal of going to Madison for Halloween at least once

You can eat a whole cream puff and probably even two

You use "up north" and "down south" to describe where you went for vacation

You drink soda, not pop

You go to Brewers games for one reason - The Sausage Races

You pronounce it Mawaukee instead of Milwaukee

You know people with the 262 area code aren't really from Milwaukee

You know the difference between ice cream & frozen custard

You think humidity is a typical part of summer weather around the country

You know better than to swim in Lake Michigan, even if the toxic warning signs have been taken down

Brett Favre holds a special place in your heart and always will

You keep track of the summer months by what festival is happening at the summerfest grounds

The sight of the Jesus Car fills you with enjoyment instead of anxiety

You hear tyme machine and think money instead of time travel

Your heart skips a beat everytime you watch Anchorman and hear Ron Burgundy say "Baxter is that you? Bark twice if you're in Milwaukee"

You know why every George Webb's has two clocks

You know that at one time both the Packers & the Brewers played at County Stadium

You remember the great days of "The Box" on channel 8

You are proud that it is the drunkest city in America and the second best party town.

Fun on the Web Oct 7 '09 Rehorst Vodka

Got a chance to see the Rehorst Distillery or rather Great Lakes Distillery bottling under the Rehorst label. It is the only distillery in Milwaukee and Wisconsin's first distillery since prohibition.

Although I have been on tours of breweries and wineries, I had never seen how liquor was made. I would highly recommend this tour and tasting for locals and tourists alike. During the one and a half hour tour you learn about how spirits are brewed and then distilled into varying products. Currently the offer Vodka, Gin, Brandies, and Absinthe with some seasonal Pumpkin Vodka. They promised a Rehorst Rum in the spring. I can't wait!
