Well November was tough for me to blog. Let's see if December is better. Still working two part time jobs so it's a time juggling thing.

Today let's talk about the stars. No I don't mean Astrology but Astronomy. I was always fascinated by the stars and now that I am out in the country boy do I have stars.

Daniel M. Soref is the Director of the Planetarium & Imax at the Milwaukee Public Museum. He puts out a star map every month showing the position of the stars with The Starry Messenger: a short (3 page) newsletter with tips on the moon and planets in our system, as well as, other Cosmic Curiosities.

What's the point of having my own soapbox if I don't step up now and again with my opinions? So after last nights ridiculous display if the GOP candidates, here is why the progressives MUST prevail: Taxes and our economic system are so screwed up with the middle class being squeezed by the non payers and cheeters. P & G is getting by without paying billions as illustrated here:

That is not to suggest they are the only culprits as there are many companies and individuals who are guilty which is why we need more regulations on money leaving the country for foreign banks, trade tarrifs on products entering our country, an end to the greed, repayments from the banks in the form of correcting those sorry loans they will be continuing to foreclose on and loans to small business (which have been virtually non-existent recently), plus a return to sanity in terms of honest profits instead of the obscenity we have seen lately.

The shift to "the richest" of a larger percent of the wealth cannot continue. The "Occupy" movement is a result of just those issues. Never have we had so many qualified individual unemployed for such long periods since the "Great Depression". With each passing year we see greater numbers of college grads (with huge student loans) that have no job to pay those loans back. Time for the GOP to "create" those jobs they campaigned on in the 2010 elections. Time for companies to stop sitting on the fence and start hiring or it's all going down the drain.

1. Sometimes I'll look down at my watch 3 consecutive times and still not know what time it is.

2. Nothing sucks more than that moment during an argument when you realize you're wrong.

3. I totally take back all those times I didn't want to nap when I was younger.

4. There is great need for a sarcasm font.

5. How the hell are you supposed to fold a fitted sheet?

6. Was learning cursive really necessary?

7. Map Quest really needs to start their directions on # 5. I'm pretty sure I know how to get out of my neighborhood.

8. Obituaries would be a lot more interesting if they told you how the person died.

9. I can't remember the last time I wasn't at least kind of tired.

10. Bad decisions make good stories.

11. You never know when it will strike, but there comes a moment at work when you know that you just aren't going to do anything productive for the rest of the day.

12. Can we all just agree to ignore whatever comes after Blue Ray? I don't want to have to restart my collection..... again.

13. I'm always slightly terrified when I exit out of Word and it asks me if I want to save any changes to my ten-page technical report that I swear I did not make any changes to.

14. I keep some people's phone numbers in my phone just so I know not to answer when they call.

15. I think the freezer deserves a light as well.

16. I disagree with Kay Jewelers. I would bet on any given Friday or Saturday night more kisses begin with Miller Lite than Kay.

18. I have a hard time deciphering the fine line between boredom and hunger.

19. How many times is it appropriate to say "What?" before you just nod and smile because you still didn't hear or understand a word they said?

20. I love the sense of camaraderie when an entire line of cars team up to prevent a jerk from cutting in at the front. Stay strong, brothers and sisters!

21. Shirts get dirty. Underwear gets dirty. Pants? Pants never get dirty, and you can wear them forever.

22. Even under ideal conditions people have trouble locating their car keys in a pocket, finding their cell phone, and Pinning the Tail on the Donkey..... but I'd bet everyone can find and push the snooze button from 3 feet away, in about 1.7 seconds, eyes closed, first time, every time.

The weekend is here. Whether you go to the movies or not you will probably see one on TV this weekend. How about a homade treat to go with it?

PER SERVING (1/4th of recipe, about 2 1/2 cups): 187 calories, 3.5g fat, 235mg sodium, 35g carbs, 3g fiber, 14g sugars, 3g protein -- PointsPlus® value 5*

Wanna snack on something large, sweet, AND salty!? Smuggle in a serving of this stuff...

Ingredients:
1 standard-sized bag 94% fat-free butter-flavored microwave popcorn
2 1/2 tbsp. peanut butter chips (found in the baking aisle)
1 1/2 tbsp. brown sugar (not packed)
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
2 1/2 cups Chocolate Cheerios (or another low-fat chocolatey cereal with about 130 calories per cup)

Directions:
Cook popcorn according to package directions. Meanwhile, place peanut butter chips into a small sealable plastic bag; using a meat mallet or another heavy utensil, finely crush chips through the bag.

Once popcorn is just cool enough to handle, measure 8 cups and place in a large microwave-safe bowl, discarding any unpopped kernels. (Save the rest of the popcorn for another time.) Evenly sprinkle crushed peanut butter chips, brown sugar, and cinnamon over the popcorn.

Microwave for 30 seconds, or until the crushed peanut butter chips have partially melted.

Gently but thoroughly mix contents of the bowl to evenly distribute the toppings. Add chocolate cereal and mix well.

Serve it up (or pack it into sealable bags) and enjoy!

What's Up with Me

I have to ask my readers tolerance for my absences in August. I've been doing some physical labor lately. Because I have always worked at a desk, this is like going to the gym for me. I have been trying to be smart and building up my tolerances but this past week was just beyond belief. One night I got home at midnight and another "short day" was almost 8 pm before I got here and had supper.

I know this will get easier as time moves forward but right now it's a job and helping to pay the bills. In the long run I will be stronger for it. It will help balance out my computer and other desk time.

Fun on the Web Aug 21, 2011 Chalk Fest at Bayshore

It was a crazy week with very little access to the internet due to travel, outages of the internet where I was, work, and some fun stuff too. First for the fun stuff: all of you in the Milwaukee area head on over to Bayshore Mall. Near guest services (and Bar Louie) they have the road blocked off where we participated in Chalk Fest

I say we, but my grand daughter really was the artist. I just drove and tried to keep her from getting too sunburned by holding a golf umbrella over her. Well I also solicited votes from friends and passers by (much to her chagrin) but what the heck. Waiting to see if she won one of the cash prizes for drawing with special water soluble chalk on the asphalt.

There were lots of people looking and one of my Meetup groups was there for lunch and to look so she should have their votes, I think. There were also some real photographers which I talked into sending me pics via email so I hope to post a picture and of course if her picture goes to the website I will post a link.

It was fun but of course I am sunburned. It's not too bad since we used SPF 50 Waterproof which we reapplied during the day. I made sure to get my grand daughter covered. Eventually I even got her part but I think it was too late already. The day started out with pouring rain so who knew what a blazing sky it would be out there. We just slathered on the sunscreen and did the best we could for shade.

She is number 45 and drew some Pokemon characters. The kids seemed to like them. It should last a little while but once they open the road there who knows how long it will last?

I love going to the fair! Don't you? The music, the veg-o-matic peddlers, seeing the animals: how can you go wrong? I'm a sucker for the food. Seriously, who can resist the cream puffs? I'm a big fan of the Mille's Italian Sausage too. Frankly there isn't a lot at the Fair I wouldn't at least try but you can't do it all.

To increase the number of things you can try, the Fair did a tasting day with a special menu (available here http://www.wistatefair.com/11_web/pdf/Crazy_Grazin_lo_res.pdf )

We had an awesome time but I am just done in.

We are coming to the point of the year when considering what to do with the bounty of the garden is approaching. I usually bring in some of my herbs for the winter, and try to save a few tomatoes. I have taken some of my herbs and dried them in the basement. They provide a continuing reminder of why fresh, really fresh is always best.

I have never canned anything but maybe I could try some this year.

Fun on the Web Aug 5, 2011 Milwaukee Art Museum

My grand daughter is into art. Just moving here from another state she had never been to the Milwaukee Art Museum. The 1st Thursday of the month Target sponsors a FREE day. Since going is a pricey proposition with tickets at $14 ($12 for senior over 65 and students 12 and up), I had planned an event on one of the free days.

After the fact, It was fabulous! We spent about 6 hours just walking around and talking about art.

We saw most everything except they are constantly changing the exhibits. We had walked through one and when we reached the end turned to go back the way we came and the room was blocked off. Later when we went by, I peeked in between the partitions and every one of the paintings were down in preparation to change the exhibit. They have so much in storage at all times that it is easy or perhaps it is hard because there is so much to choose from in storage.

As a long time chiropractic patient, I have a personal interest in this subject. The short version is I flew through the air and landed on one shoulder, did the traditional medical route of drugs, PT, OT, Whirlpools, Intermittent Traction, and even tried Utrasound before I resorted to chiropractic. After a year I was out of pain for the first time!

The prescription is always to strengthen my core. Now it may be a return to Yoga. A subject I taught at the Community Center back in the day and something I turn to time and again.

Being really fair, I have watched out in the summer for a long time. Everyone around me knows I am very prone to sunburn. I have grown to loathe the feel of sunscreen, but now there are moisturizers that are less disgusting (some even have a little color in them.) They are a major improvement!

The best advice is to stay out of the noon day sun. In other words, minimize the time you are outside between 10am and 3pm, wear a hat, sit or walk in the shade, turn your back to the sun, and look for any opportunity no matter how short during those hours to avoid sun but still try to have a normal life.That means I eat lunch inside, take walks early or late in the day, avoid the pool or lake till after 3pm, and generally enjoy my air conditioning or shady yard mid day.

Meetups is an online way to coordinate get-togethers of strangers/acquaintances who want to pursue a purpose. This could be politics, business networking, exercise groups, book clubs, dining clubs, or my favorite: The Girlfriends Group. I belong to several of these with various names: The Girlfriends Network, GIRLFRIENDS' CLUB (for Ladies 30 to 60), and Fabulous 40+ Womens Social Group. These are all groups of ladies who want to make new friends and have some fun.

I had a Scrabble Group in Madison at one point on Meetup. I even started a Girlfriends Group up north when I moved there. There were no other Meetups in the area when I started but now there are a few different ones. Our Girlfriends of Northcentral Wisconsin group fizzled once I left town and will end in about two weeks unless my co-organizers find some new blood to get the group going.

If you are looking for new friends or new fun check it out. Even if you want to get into politics, Scrabble or a dining group this is a great way to do it. Don't get me wrong, the bigger the city, the more types of groups you can find, so go on there, sign up, and check out your area.

Now we all know I don't realy recommend products but when buying local with no preservatives, I am all about being able to use all of my produce that I buy at the Farmers Market and not let it rot away. There is something to be said about fresh daily but where can we all get that these days? For sure not at the supermaket and our local Farmers Market is only once a week.

While I was up north I started to learn to make what I call tutti fruitti Martinis from scratch. With no liquor stores and limited availability of premix up there, (the best available mix is Stirrings from Target . . . yes, up there Target has a liquor Department, as do Gas Stations.) Chocolate is a flavor I have not tried my hand at yet, but I am willing to try it as soon as I get the ingredients.

Vanilla chocolate martini (makes 3-4 servings)
6 oz (180 ml) vanilla vodka
4 oz (120 ml) Irish creme liqueur
4 oz (120 ml) creme de caçao

Chocolate shavings (optional)
Whipped cream (optional)
A Chocolate candy or kiss to garnish (optional)

Godiva chocolate martini (serves one)
Chocolate sauce and sugar for rim of glass

1 1/2 oz (45ml) vodka

Fresh raspberries

Mint chocolate chip vodka martini (serves one to two)
3 oz (90ml) chocolate vodka
1.5 oz (45ml) creme de menthe
1.5 oz (45ml) creme de caçao
Ice

1 oz (30ml) vanilla vodka
1/2 oz (15ml) white creme de caçao
1 oz (30ml) white chocolate liquor
